Chapter Twelve

George never liked learning the truth about how some people lived, and hearing Lily’s story had sent him a bit screwy. Every time she’d told him instances of what Jared had done, he’d seen parallels with his mother’s situation, superimposing her face over Lily’s as he imagined the scenes in his head.

The fists, the thumps, the bruises.

That brick.

Since seeing her, him and Greg had put a plan together, one that followed the same path as others when they’d been in this kind of shit. They had to lure Miriam out of hiding, but the warehouse wasn’t going to work. She’d twig immediately if they asked her there, and she wouldn’t believe they wanted to discuss mutual business, not now whispers were going round that George and Greg may well have got rid of a couple of other leaders who’d dogged them off.

No, it had to be an outright ambush with this woman, and they’d have to use Lily for it to happen. She’d request a public meeting, making out she had info she couldn’t tell her over the phone, either in a conversation or via text. When Martin had been watching them in Costa, he’d said Miriam had walked to the lift by herself, stepped inside alone, so unless she had her men keeping an eye on her from the precinct, then on whichever level of the multi-story she’d parked her car, she felt comfortable enough in her disguise to breeze about unattended.

The blonde wig and loads of makeup Lily had described made sense. Miriam was a skinhead who usually covered her bonce with baseball caps, and she rarely had makeup on, not any time George had seen her anyway. She didn’t go for designer gear, even though she could afford it, so the black suit she’d opted for when meeting Lily was even more of a smoke screen. Miriam was most at home in skinny jeans and T-shirts, blending in with other people her age—she was only twenty-odd but a hardened little cow from her dealings in the gang she’d belonged to as a lowly member until she’d got herself noticed and became that bloke’s right-hand girl.

George and Greg had come up with a suitable solution, one where Martin and Will also needed to be involved, but as they wouldn’t be hurting anyone—much—George couldn’t see why they’d refuse. He’d offer them five grand apiece instead of the usual one or two; the lure of money tempted even the purest of hearts.

He swirled gin and tonic around in his cut-crystal glass and envied his brother who’d gone to bed to ‘sleep the sleep of the dead’, so Greg had put it. George wasn’t likely to see the Land of Nod anytime soon. He’d probably end up kipping in this armchair, waking to the smell of Greg cooking a fry-up.

He closed his eyes, and Lily/Mum appeared in his mind, their combined features creating a whole new woman, one he struggled to recognise. Maybe his brain was playing games, forging them
